I won't say everything happens for a reason. I know and understand too little. But I will say everything that happens is given a reason. I cannot abide the idea that God purposes the murders or rapes of the world: that a good God — a God that is the defining root of the concept "good" — could himself intend any moral evil (being the negation of his essential character). But I will say that he takes what is void and fills it. He creates. He gives sense to the senseless. He defines. To the purposeless he gives purpose. He brings reason to where there is no reason. This is how our sufferings may become paths to growth.
